No, we don’t mean the buttery, delicious bread you have on the side of grandma’s soup — we’re talking about Kornbread “the snack” Jeté drag queen who was on Season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

A few weeks ago, Reader Gina J. reached out to us to share about Tevin Kyrell Williams — a graduate + former thespian at Richland Northeast High School. Gina met Tevin while he played Gina’s daughter’s love interest in one of the school’s shows. They became close friends in theater and performed in Cats the Musical together.

After graduation, Tevin moved to Los Angeles and began performing in drag shows. Tevin transitioned to Demoria Elise Williams and thus, Kornbread ‘The Snack’ Jete — her stage name — was born. She was so fabulous, that she was chosen to be a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

She won the first episode’s competition — The Charisma, Nerve and Talent Show — where she performed in front of GRAMMY AWARD winning artist, Lizzo as a guest judge using her original song. Unfortunately, she had to leave the show due to an ankle injury during the Super Tease challenge.

Though her time on the show ended, she was considered a fan-favorite, because baked Kornbread is always a crowd pleaser. When asked during an interview with Billboard if she was going back on the show she said “I’m hoping they bring me back! It’s actually the 11th commandment — “thou shalt bring Kornbread’s ass back to the people’s TV.”

Update — city council approved $670,000 to go toward the pedestrian safety project for Assembly Street. The entire project is expected to cost $16 million, with $3 million already raised. The project has no start date, but plans are expected to be finalized sometime in 2023. 🚷 (WACH Fox)

Swiff Brand will open Sat., Feb. 26 from 12-5 p.m. at 736 Harden St. in Five Points. Swiff Brand started as a mobile boutique at Soda City, but you can now purchase clothes in the store’s first brick-and-mortar headquarters. 👕
We popped into the newly reopened + rebranded Primal yesterday and were greeted by some good news. Brickhouse Gourmet Coffee + Tea will be opening in front-of-house March 7. The shop posted on our Instagram that they’re “so excited to partner with Primal and truly appreciate the outpouring of support.” ☕

Sports

Gamecock baseball starts today. The Gamecocks will host UNC Greensboro starting at 4 p.m. at Founders Park. Get tickets and see the full 2022 schedule here. ⚾

Edu

The SC Department of Education partnered with Children’s Trust of South Carolina to address trauma that students have experienced due to change during the pandemic. School leaders in our area will have a two-day training to recognize signs of stress in students. (WACH Fox)

Legacy

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden posted that its 31-year-old male Hamadryas baboon, Bubba, died. Bubba’s zookeeper called him feisty, spicy, and was always spotted beside his sister, Baffles. Bubba was cared for at our local zoo for 12 years.

DYK — old Christmas trees are good for fish? SCDNR drops over 300 trees into Lake Murray in an effort to restore fish populations. The trees provide a complex habitat for younger fish once spawned as temperatures rise. 🐟 (WLTX)
