• The Peak Street overpass — a new bridge over I-26 near Chapin — is now open. The new overpass will handle more traffic as I-26 is widened and is part of the Midlands Connection Project. The next 6 bridges are expected to be completed in 2024. Stay tuned for updates. 🛣 (The Post and Courier)

• The Forest Acres Main Street Project has begun + step one of the project is rebranding the area by giving it a new name. This project will affect commercial districts in the Atascadero, Covenant, Bethel Church, and Barnes Mill Roads areas. What would you name the area? Let us know. (WLTX)

• 7,000. The approximate number of hours UofSC School of Nursing faculty + students volunteered to vaccinate South Carolinians. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners honored the students and faculty who volunteered across 9 Midlands vaccination sites. 🩺 (ABC Columbia)

• Southern Living released a video and an article on exploring our beautiful city this fall. The article highlights the Columbia Museum of Art, Congaree National Park, and several leaf-peeping destinations like Riverbanks Zoo + Saluda Shoals Park. 🍂

Feel Good

• Last week, staff + students came together to duct tape the principal to a wall in the cafeteria at Jackson Elementary School. More than 500 students participated, and it was all for a good cause. The school raised $8,600 for the United Way. 🎒(Cola Daily)

• The Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority — also called The COMET — announced the Richland County Lifeline Program, which provides low-income residents with transit passes. 

Cause

• Lexington County resident Craig Richardson is working to raise $50,000 through Real Men Wear Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Craig uses his car — a 1955 Packard 400 Executive Series — to give patients + survivors a chance to talk through their experiences. He hopes the video series will bring awareness. • October is Firewood Awareness Month and the SC Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism and the SC Forestry Commission have partnered to remind folks to “buy it where you burn it.” According to SCPRT forester Rachel Snuggs, buying firewood from 10+ miles away can increase the risk of transporting exotic pests + diseases that can harm the ecology of local forest systems. • The Red Cross of South Carolina recently honored Lexington Medical Center employee Savannah Tapler with the Red Cross Blood Drop Award for leading her 100th blood drive for the hospital. 🩸 Ⓟ
