If you haven’t heard of it, or have and want to learn more, we’re giving you the rundown on the national event.
National Night Out is an annual event that takes place on the first Tuesday of August. It was introduced in 1984 as a community-building campaign and has grown in popularity ever since. Currently, 66 cities in SC participate in the event + make up a part of the 16,000 communities around the country that celebrate.

While the events are fun and make for a good reason to get out of the house, there’s a deeper motive behind the holiday. NNO promotes police-community partnerships and encourages residents to get to know their neighbors with the goal of creating safer + happier communities.

- Providence Health, and a hospital in Kershaw county, have officially been purchased by MUSC for $75 million. The Columbia hospital is now named MUSC Health Columbia Medical Center. More than 2,000 beds and 19,000 employees across the state are now owned + employed by MUSC. 🏥 (Post and Courier)

- Hey, Deadheads. JerryFest is coming back. It will return Sun., Oct. 3 to Five Points from 2-10 p.m. JerryFest is a free, outdoor concert held to honor Jerry Garcia and will feature multiple bands performing Grateful Dead music along with artisan crafts, food, beverage + merchandise vendors.
- A Day To Remember is coming to the Township Auditorium on Nov. 11 as a stop on their Re-entry Tour along with Asking Alexandria + Point North. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. 🎶
History
- While awaiting the $42 million in federal aid to repair the 197-year-old Columbia Canal from the 2015 floods, an archaeology site — including artifacts from 8,000 BC and historic buildings — have emerged. How to repair the canal while preserving its historical significance are being discussed by archaeologists + The River Alliance. (The Post and Courier)

- Through Thurs., Aug. 5, Health Force, LLC will be offering free COVID-19 vaccinations from 8 a.m-12 p.m. + 2-6 p.m. at The COMET located at 1727 Sumter St. Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Rapid testing will also be offered. 🦠

- Benedict College is clearing the balances for all students in response to COVID-19 financial hardships. Almost $4 million has been applied to student accounts to help lift the burden of financial stress. 💰

- The SC Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism is accepting letters of intent from local government entities for the Undiscovered SC grant program. The program helps communities develop publicly-owned tourism development + attractions that bring visitors. Letters of intent applications are due Sept. 24 by 4 p.m.

- Richland Library Friends of Foundation is accepting historically-significant donations in the form of books, CDs, DvDs, and other items. You can drop off your donations at the Richland Library Operations Center, located at 130 Lancewood Rd., beside the PPG Paint Store. Be sure to check the drop off schedule. 📚
