Last night, the City of Columbia Council passed an emergency ordinance, which will require all residents (ages 5 and up) to wear a mask in public and when visiting businesses in order to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The ordinance went into effect immediately and will last for 30 days.
The City of Cayce passed a similar ordinance on Tuesday that will be in effect for 60 days beginning on Fri., Sept. 10 and the City of West Columbia also has a mask mandate that will be in place for 30 days.

When will masks be required?
- Inside a public building
- Waiting to enter a public building
- Interacting with others outdoors within six feet of each other
- In public and private businesses
- Public and private transportation
- Walking in public when it isnโt possible to maintain 6 feet distance from others
When do I not need to wear a mask?
- In personal vehicles
- In an enclosed space or when youโre only with members of your household
- During outdoor physical activity not within six feet of others
- While eating, drinking or smoking
- Within religious establishments
- When a mask causes or aggravates a health condition
- When a mask would prevent the receipt of personal services
Violating this portion of the ordinance could result in a fine of up to $100.

Development
- Yesterday, the City of Columbia approved the $4.5 million sale of a Devine Street building, at 2221 Devine St. The private, Charleston-based developer has plans to turn the 6-story building into apartments, retail + restaurant space. There will also be a 2-level parking garage that will allow for at least 50 public parking spaces. (The Post and Courier)
Coronavirus
- The Columbia City Council approved a mandate that will require city employees to get a COVID-19 vaccine by Nov. 1. Employees who show proof of vaccination will be eligible for bonuses up to $500. (WACH Fox)
Canceled
- The Gervais Street Bridge Dinner has been canceled due to an increase in COVID-19 cases. The event was scheduled for Oct. 10 and it will be rescheduled for 2022. (The State)

- The first South Carolina location of I Heart Mac & Cheese is coming soon to Columbia on Wed., Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. and will be located at 1033 Roberts Brand Pkwy., Suite 202. The grand opening will have giveaways throughout the day, guests can try the build-your-own macaroni and cheese bowls + eat grilled cheese sandwiches. ๐ง
