Hello Thursday.
April 25 2024
Have you heard of Delta-8? No, we aren’t talking about the airline company or the faucet hardware. Today we are breaking down the 411 on the agricultural product known as Delta-8 that has been growing on the Midlands.
So, what is it?
We don’t want to get in the weeds, so Delta-8 is 1 of 140+ compounds found in cannabis that has become increasingly popular due to the similarity to Delta-9 (aka tetrahydrocannabinol, the scientific name for THC). Delta-9 users have been known to experience feelings of happiness, increased hunger, symptom relief, and more.
Basically, the 2 cannabinoids have similar chemical structures + their names.
Is it legal in SC?
Currently, South Carolina has not banned Delta-8 + it is available locally. According to the South Carolina Department of Agriculture, the hemp plant is legal to grow in the state with proper permits; however, it has to have a THC level below .3%. Anything above that is illegal in the state, for now.

Renovated exterior of Gadsden Place | Rendering by Garvin Design Group
Originally constructed in 1920, Gadsden Place has transformed into one of downtown Columbia’s newest live-work communities.
Located in the heart of the Vista, the twin Italianate buildings at 1209 and 1211 Gadsden St. (think: behind Jimmy John’s on Gervais St.) now host 8 apartments + 4 office/retail suites. These suites include 12 unique live-work units that are available to rent as of July 1.

In the past, the buildings housed several tenants including J.W. Vaughan Co., Inc. + the former location of B.W. Clark. This area is also a significant part of the West Gervais Historic District — it’s even listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
During its rehabilitation from 2020-21, the project implemented an adaptive reuse method to preserve the buildings’ history + distinctive characteristics of early 20th century architecture in Columbia’s commercial + warehousing area. Ⓟ
